Mass fatality events are increasing in frequency.
Scientists project that natural catastrophes like severe weather crises and infectious disease outbreaks will only become more common.
The COVID-19 crisis has illuminated gaps in preparedness, proving how surges in deaths pose operational and logistical challenges for those responding. Even a city or hospital with a strong disaster response plan for manmade and natural events can become overwhelmed in extreme circumstances.
This is the time to do all we can to ensure we are prepared for whatever is next. It is our responsibility to address the inadequacies of the current systems and plans to make sure we are in the best position to humanely and properly care for those impacted by this virus or other surges in fatality, mass fatality events, and public health crises—now and in the future.
